Most People Build Prisons

Over the last decade, I’ve built four separate businesses to over $250,000 a year in revenue. Each one I could’ve stuck with and been living just fine for the rest of my life.

But each time I grew to hate them. I followed the usual business strategies to build them up but then I would wake up every morning dreading having to look at them.

If you’re looking to build a straightforward business where you find exactly what people want and then offer it to them, then you don’t need to read any further.

Go buy a simple marketing course or seven and go from there.

My problem was that it didn’t make sense that I had the opportunity to connect to millions of people around the world and not find a way to introduce them to the things that I like. And more importantly make good money from it.

Let me put it in more simple terms…

I wanted to profit from my joy.

I wanted to wake up excited about what I was working on and without worrying if a bill would be paid.

You don’t see that very often. The artist who gets to be an artist and live where they want. The gardener who gets to live in their business and not just as a hobby.

If I was able to build four separate businesses to a quarter-million dollars each, then why couldn’t I do it with the things that I love?

Each of these businesses that I built was a prison. I knew the blueprint and I followed it. When I was done there was nothing left for me to do but to do the things that I hated doing every single day.

Follow the social media templates. Create the same type of offers. Try to avoid sounding like everyone else while still sounding like everyone else.

And the worst thing…

Putting the audience first.

Yep. I said it.

The prison isn’t around the building that you’ve created. It’s the audience that keeps you locked in. Everyday you wake up thinking about how you can please them. You listen to their complaints, their struggles, and their burdens.

It doesn’t matter what you want to do because if it doesn’t benefit them, then they’ll ignore it.

A prison.

It’s not a surprise that so many people burn out. And it’s even less of a surprise why most people don’t even get close to succeeding.

So what’s the opposite of building a prison?
